Arabic is one of the typical examples of this phenomenon in world languages today. Diglossia in Arabic-speaking communities is manifested through the use of two distinct language varieties, which are not mutually comprehensible. These include Al-lugha Alfusha – Modern Standard Arabic – and Al-lugha Al-ammiya – referred to as ‘colloquial’ Arabic … the ways in which diglossia along with cultural perceptions of literacy influenced the literacy acquisition of four native Arabic speakers from different parts of the Arab world. Enriched by the author’s recent fieldwork in four Arab countries, this book is an essential resource for researchers and students of sociolinguistics, Arabic lin-guistics, and Arabic studies.
